DISPLACED CHILDREN IN AFRICA
MMA Assisted and Served Abandoned and Displaced Children in Africa
In Africa, warfare and political instability have led to the displacement of an estimated 2 million of its population. Urban centers are full of refugees -- mainly children who fled their villages in search of food, shelter, and peace of mind. They suffered from varying degrees of anxiety and emotional distress that will affect them for the remainder of their lives. The displacement of these children into the urban areas or foreign nations has made them vulnerable to warlords, prostitution and gangs.
They live as orphans, runaways, street beggars, and are creating a new society without legal structure or appropriate caregivers. The majority of them have suffered abuse, unjust imprisonment and mistreatment. Their life-spans are short, due to malnutrition, starvation, illness, and other issues.
MMA has established a strong record of accomplishment in Africa.
Since 1994, MMA has initiated a support program for displaced children in Bukavu. Uvira, Goma and other war ravaged regions of Africa. At the present, MMA with the support of local churches, medical doctors, psychiatrists, and other professionals has created additional child support centers to provide:
Shelter to children who have been separated from or abandoned by parents
Legal assistance to children who suffered unjust imprisonment
Post war counseling to children who have suffered trauma and corporal injury
Family orientation for abandoned children waiting for adoption or a new home
Community Protection for former children soldiers running away from warlords and street gangs
Family / community reunifications for children who have been separated from their families during fighting and unrest
Counseling for parents in search of their displaced children or parents who have reunited with their children after years of separation or abandonment
Training that fosters self-confidence and social skills so that they can be re-integrated to the main stream of their environment without fear and handicap.
Siblings counseling and reunification assistance for brothers and sisters who have been apart for many years, who are orphans or relying on each other for survival or family comfort.
MMA monitored its programs rigorously.
A team of specialist serves as task force to guide, evaluate and monitor these programs.
